Halawi dates are known as a ‘soft date.’ Nature’s perfect candy, the halawi date’s unique sweetness makes it a top selling variety. These oblong, medium-sized dates boast an attractive light brown skin. Many tasters say the smooth texture uniquely attributed to this variety carries a creamy and chocolaty flavor that is all natural.

Most impressively though, the health benefits of the halawi date have been shown to be immense and ensure the Halawi’s status as a Superfruit. According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Technion Professor Michael Aviram has shown that despite the sweet taste of the fruit, halawi dates do not raise blood sugar levels and in fact helps prevent the clogging of arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis.

His analysis has proven that eating 100 grams of dates a day for a month not only did not cause an increase in blood sugar but also significantly reduced the levels of triglyceride fats in the blood. This diet also minimized oxygenation of cholesterol, helping to create a healthier cardiovascular system. Oxygenation of cholesterol is a process that allows fatty plaque to attach itself to the endothelium of the vessels found in the heart and pathways leading to the brain.

Michael Aviram is the same researcher to discover various health benefits attributed to red wine, pomegranates and olive oil in suppressing the development of heart disease and stroke.
